FDM printingFDM printers are workhorses and if you have the modeling skill, you can do so many things with them.
I've gotten to the point where I'll download a model but make changes to it to fit my needs if I need to do so. While painting minis still takes a level of patience and skill, 3D modelling is a whole different level. I find it fun and engaging, and I practice a different type of engineering than what I do on a daily basis. An example can be seen in one of the pictures of a holder for my vacuum attachments and a wall-mount for the vacuum. The shark vacuum was pretty new, and they made a slight change to the attachment mechanism. I found a model online for the previous attachment style, and made some slight updates to it to fit my needs. I also reduced it's size significantly because it didn't need to be as large as it was, and I put the backplate at a slant so the brush attachment doesn't push hard into the wall. Another example is the remote holder for our air filter. What company builds a product with a tiny little remote that doesn't have a place to safely store the remote? I pulled out my trusty calipers and measured the device and started prototyping what eventually turned into the remote holder you see in the image. |
